Okay, folks, let’s be real. Sometimes life throws you a funny curveball (or, in this case, a full bladder) that tests your best intentions. Last week, something happened that was so ridiculous, I wasn’t sure if I should share it. But hey, being open is important, right? We’re all human and messing up is practically a guarantee!
I was on the train, super excited as I approached my stop. Nature called and I was already dreaming of the perfect bathroom. I got off the train feeling like a hero after scoring directions from a security guard, only to hit a wall (well, a locked bathroom door) at the fast-food place. Desperate, I blurted out, “Do I have to pay to use the restroom? Just tell me what to do!” (Let’s just say, manners weren’t my top priority.)
The attendant laughed. Now, I get that humor can help, but in a bathroom emergency, it felt more like salt in the wound. Anyway, I followed her instructions, bought a drink, used the restroom (hallelujah), and headed back, completely oblivious to the people waiting for their food.
Here’s where things got interesting. A customer told me they called my “order number” and I should get my drink. Panic set in. My desperate plea to use the restroom somehow turned into an accidental (and unwanted) purchase! Flustered, I explained the situation, refused the drink, and walked out. Guilt washed over me, in my rush to save face, I ended up being rude myself.
This whole experience got me thinking about living as a Christian. Romans 12:18 says to “Strive to live in peace with everyone,” and honestly, my actions weren’t exactly peaceful. Sometimes, when we’re stressed or flustered, we might act in ways that don’t reflect well on us or our faith.
But here’s the good news: even the kindest people mess up sometimes. The important thing is to learn from it. 1 John 1:9 reminds us, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness”.
How do we make peace?
So, what do you think? Have you ever found yourself in a similar situation? Here are some ways to make peace when faced with stressful moments, inspired by the Bible’s wisdom:
Take a Deep Breath: A few deep breaths can calm your nerves and help you think clearly, just like Proverbs 15:1 advises: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
Apologize if Needed: If you reacted poorly, a sincere apology could go a long way. Ephesians 4:26 reminds us, ““Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.” Don’t let your frustration fester, address it with humility.
Focus on Forgiveness: Forgive yourself and the other person for any misunderstandings. Colossians 3:13 instructs us to, “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Holding onto anger only hurts you in the long run.
Offer Kindness: Instead of escalating the situation, try responding with kindness. Romans 12:18 emphasizes, “Strive to live in peace with everyone.” Even a small gesture of kindness can go a long way in diffusing tension.
Looking back, this whole experience is pretty funny! It’s a reminder that even stressful situations can hold a lesson (and maybe a laugh) if we approach them with a little grace.
Prayer:
Lord, forgive me for letting frustration get the better of me. Help me remember your grace and peace in all situations,Guide me to respond with kindness and understanding, even when faced with challenges. Amen.
