God, can you hear me? (how delay can revitalize your prayer life)

by ashestobloom

Have you ever gazed up at the night sky, whispered a prayer and wondered if it reached beyond the stars? We pray for comfort, guidance or even a miracle, but a nagging doubt might linger: Does God hear us from so far away? Does He listen only to the prayers of the “good” people, or is His ear open to everyone, regardless of their background?

In Psalm 34:15, we read, “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are attentive to their cry.” This verse highlights God’s attentiveness, but it doesn’t imply exclusivity. In fact, the Bible paints a clear picture: God doesn’t discriminate based on an individual’s background or actions (Romans 3:23). Regardless of our past or present, God hears the cries of our hearts. The beauty of God’s grace is that the door is always open for anyone to approach Him through repentance and faith (Acts 2:38). The story of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) exemplifies this perfectly. When the unrighteous turn to God with sincere hearts, He welcomes them with open arms. As we draw near to God, He draws near to us (James 4:8). This closeness fosters a trusting relationship where prayers can flow freely.

Unanswered petitions can sometimes leave us bewildered. Our wishes may not be aligned with God’s perfect plan for us (James 4:3). He longs for what ultimately benefits us and that may not always coincide with our temporary desires. Other contributing factors include unforgiveness harboured in our hearts (Mark 11:25), a wavering faith (Matthew 17:20), or living a life that contradicts God’s principles (Isaiah 59:1-2).

The state of our hearts can significantly impact how our prayers are received. Unconfessed sin, doubt and a lack of genuine surrender can create unseen roadblocks. By acknowledging our shortcomings, embracing forgiveness, and aligning our hearts with God’s will, we pave the way for powerful prayers.

Sometimes, prayers are already answered in the spiritual realm, but the manifestation in the physical takes time (Romans 8:28). This can be a test of our faith, but it doesn’t mean our prayers are unheard. Trusting in His timing and purpose is crucial during these times. The story of Daniel’s delayed answer (Daniel 10:12-13) sheds light on the concept of spiritual warfare. Daniel’s prayers faced opposition from a demonic force, highlighting the reality that spiritual forces can act as roadblocks, but temporary ones at best. While God allows these temporary delays, it’s important to remember His absolute sovereignty. Satan’s power is ultimately limited (Job 1:12). God permits these challenges to refine our faith and draw us closer to Him (James 1:2-4).

So, how can we overcome delays caused by spiritual opposition or inner struggles? Here are some steps to strengthen your prayers:

Align Your Prayers with God’s Will: Seek His guidance through scripture and prayer (James 4:3).

Renew Your Heart: Confess and forsake sin, cultivating a spirit of forgiveness (Mark 11:25).

Stand Firm in Faith: Believe in God’s promises and power to answer prayer (Hebrews 11:1).

Declare God’s Word: Speak scriptures that combat spiritual opposition (Ephesians 6:12).

Wondering how to revitalize your prayer life? Follow these:

Seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance: Ask for the Spirit’s help to pray effectively and align your prayers with God’s will. He teaches us how to pray in the spirit.

Keep a prayer journal: Record your prayers, thoughts and answers to track your progress and growth.

Fast or practice self-reflection: Set aside time for fasting or meditation to deepen your connection with God.

Remember, revitalizing your prayer life is a personal and ongoing process. Be patient, kind and compassionate with yourself as you explore new ways to connect with God.

Prayer:

Dear Father, thank You for Your constant presence and the promise to always answer when I cry to You. Help me to open my heart to Your will and trust that You have my life figured out, in Jesus’ name (amen).

May God’s love and grace transform our lives as we pray and may our prayers become a powerful testimony to His faithfulness and goodness.
