A recent documentary sparked my interest in Moses’ story, a tale of a prince turned shepherd, a man who felt far from his destiny. Perhaps you, like Moses, yearn to discover your purpose, but the noise of life drowns out any potential calling.
The truth is, God speaks, but often we’re too busy or distracted to hear Him. Moses, comfortable in the palace, needed a radical shift. God led him not to a grand temple, but to an unexpected place: the wilderness, amidst a burning bush (Exodus 3:2). In that desolate landscape, stripped of his former life, Moses encountered the divine.
The Bible reminds us in Psalm 46:10 (NIV): “Be still, and know that I am God.” Sometimes, finding purpose requires stillness, a quieting of our own internal chatter. Just as Moses had to step away from the distractions of Egypt, we too might need to create space for God’s voice in our lives. This could involve prayer, meditation, spending time in nature, or simply taking a break from the constant noise.
When Moses encountered the burning bush, he wasn’t prepared to lead a nation. God equips him, stating in Exodus 3:12 (NIV), “I will be with you.” This promise resonates throughout scripture – God doesn’t call us to a task without also providing the strength and guidance to fulfill it.
So, how do you find your burning bush? Here are a few tips:
• Practice stillness: Dedicate time each day to quiet reflection, prayer, or meditation.
• Pay attention to what ignites your passion: What activities energize you? Where do you lose track of time?
• Listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit: A nudge to help a neighbor, a desire to learn a new skill – these could be whispers of your calling.
• Seek guidance: Talk to trusted mentors or spiritual leaders who can offer support and insight.
Remember, your purpose isn’t confined to a grand title or a specific career. It might be found in acts of kindness, in nurturing your family, or in using your talents to bless others.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, Sometimes the noise of life drowns out your voice. Help me create space for you in my heart and mind. Guide me towards the path you have prepared for me, and equip me with the strength and wisdom to fulfill my calling. Amen.
Don’t wait for a literal burning bush. Start your journey today. Seek stillness, explore your passions and listen for the whispers of your calling. You might be surprised by the unexpected places where God reveals your purpose.
